Filaria Control Program:

Filariasis is one of the health problems of Bangladesh which is a family, social and economic burden. This disease exists in 73 countries of the world. Malnutrition, poverty, social status, superstition, illiteracy and dirty living environment, densely populated habitations, lack of health awareness etc. are responsible for the spread of this disease. In 1997, the World Health Organization decided to eliminate filariasis worldwide by 2020. The Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh is working towards the eradication of this disease from Bangladesh by 2015. Among nearly 3.5 lakh people already affected, the disease is prevalent in varying degrees.Regular medication stops the infection of goiter, but the disability caused by goiter is not completely cured, but with proper care, the life of the sufferer can be made bearable. The world’s first filarial hospital was established at Dhlagach Mauza in Kamarpukur Union of Syedpur Upazila of Nilphamari District. The organization has been providing advanced treatment to filaria patients all over the country on a regular basis. Filariasis prevalence is high in Bangladesh, India, China, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Africa, Central and South America. This disease has existed in Bangladesh since the sixties. In 34 districts of our country, the number of patients with filaria or measles is very high.Among them, 19 districts namely Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Sirajganj, Pabna, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Pirojpur and Jhalkathi districts have the highest prevalence of this disease.Later, the Bangladesh government declared Bangladesh free of filaria in 2020, but still there are filaria patients everywhere in Bangladesh. Therefore, Syedpur Filaria and General Hospital and Lab signed a memorandum of understanding with ‘Lepra Bangladesh’ for better training of BPDA members across the country, including the creation of a database of filaria patients across the country, with the aim of better treatment of filariasis in Bangladesh. Those trainings include hands-on education in improving the quality of first aid and the use of telemedicine to prevent antibiotic and steroid misuse and provide better care. Also, there is a separate unit called “Filariasis Control Program” at Syedpur Filaria & General Hospital & Lab for eradication of Filariasis.
